1/9/2024 0 Comments Magic arena![]() ![]() The key thing is that at any point I could pick it up, and outside of learning a few keywords here and there - and the concept of Planeswalkers, powerful summon-like cards with their own spells - I could play without much fuss. My history with Magic started when it really took off, and periodically over the years, various itches flared back up (I think it’s a permanent rash now), calling me to play. Magic is one of the most popular games in the world for a reason: it’s still good after all this time. Magic: Arena is basically a recreation of that strong base, with its own set of monetization problems to boot. That was the power of Magic, and in the two decades plus since its release, that spark has endured. ![]() The idea of building decks (made easier when groups of friends donated a ton of cards to a cube) was something completely foreign to me, like choosing party members in a JRPG had been years before, or picking which Mega Man level to tackle next. Still, even with its current bugs, Magic the Gathering: Arena is on its way to becoming a great digital CCG-one well worth your time and disk space. The first time I touched a Magic card was 1996, and within moments I was entranced. At this point in open beta, Wizards of the Coast is still working on the game, and that means you should expect imbalances, possible improper matchmaking, and the occasional glitch. But new players will marvel at the brilliant graphics and figuring out how hundreds of cards interact. Some players are bound to feel limited by the relatively small free play area, (access to special events, decks, and modes costs a good deal of real-world money) but that's more of a veteran player problem. Outside the arena, simple quests give you something to work toward as well as a way to earn more currency. While the game's complexity means you'll probably endure a good number of losses at the start, getting experience and rewards even when you lose helps to soften the blow. Versus is less intimidating than it might be, thanks to a chat system that only allows you to pick from a preset list of polite expressions and a mute button that lets you turn your opponent off if need be. And once it's done, you're ready to jump into online versus play. Magic the Gathering: Arena does a great job with a multi-stage tutorial that feeds you what you need to know in small, digestible chunks. CCGs (collectible card games) are by nature complex, and many of them stumble when it comes to initiating new players. Wizards of the Coast have been making the tabletop version of Magic the Gathering for more than twenty-five years, so it's no surprise that Magic the Gathering: Arena is an incredible take on their physical game. Summary if you want to play magic the gathering, do it live as Arena is the worst example of MTG and the most disappointing game to play for the cost.ĭigital collectible card games abound these days, and some are better than others, but this take on one of the most popular games of them all is easily one of the best around. I don't rant or complain about many things in my life but once we contacted Valve we got an automated email saying the algorithm has been thoroughly tested and is fine and no action will be taken (they wont even accept the facts), then its time to move to hearthstone. I have played in drafts and get similar or worse. I have had bad draws in matches (accepted as part of the game and shuffle) but drawing things like all your big casters and 1 land, then mulligan, one land and the same cards, mulligan again, 2 lands of one color and all cards of a different color (down to 4 cards to start (if you accept it). As previously stated I have played for a long time and NEVER have I drawn 7 lands in a row, in Arena I have drawn 7 lands in a row 8 times in 2 months. The algorithm used is not even close to reality, let me explain. The introduction of MTG ARENA is the most disappointing experience i have ever had in Magic. I have played magic for almost 22 years at tournament level and it is a fantastic strategy game.
